Malta - Great Diving for those in the know.

Malta is one of those places you may have passed over when looking for potential destinations...if you have then you have been doing yourself a disservice because this gem of an island in the southern mediterranean is a superb dive holiday location with arguably some of the best diving to be had at any of the mediterranean locations.

It's great at times to just sit back, close my eyes and pretend I am back in Malta. A destination like none other I have been to in all of my travels. English-speaking, Turkish-influenced, Roman Catholic roots describe Malta in words, but no words can describe the terrain, the people or the feeling one gets of being far away from home in a place that is really just 60 miles south of Italy as a bird flies.

But it's not the map or the location, right in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea, that will describe Malta. No, it's the state of mind that is Malta. Tell three people you're visiting Malta and perhaps two of them will say "Where is it?," and the other one will be jealous knowing the 7000 years of history that Malta boasts.

It's certain, if you want an out-of-the-way vacation where you are not likely to run into Uncle Bill or anyone from your neighborhood, then Malta is the perfect destination.

For history buffs, it doesn't get any better.
For sun worshipers, there is always sun - it's in the southern aspect of the Mediterranean Sea after all.
For day-trippers, you can do that too since the island is so close to Italy.

With a hint of the cultures that have come before; Phoenicians, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Castillians, the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem, French and British there is much to discover as you enjoy the favorable climate and a carefree atmosphere that is just part of what makes Malta memorable.

And then of course there is the Diving! - you will not be disappointed as will be further explained. Yes there are reefs, yes there are caves, yes there are artificial reefs, recent and old and yes there are wrecks resulting from the second world war.

You will also find a thriving dive industry with friendly, knowledgeable staff who will work hard to ensure your diving holiday is a memorable one.
There are good hotels in malta and a selection of cheap malta flights are not hard to track down.
Car rental in Malta is straight forward and reasonably priced too.
My family have a particular soft spot for this triplet of islands (Malta, Comino and Gozo) having spent a number of vacations there. Three of my children learned to dive in Malta as did I. Ask any one of us and you are likely to hear glowing reports of the diving but also the hospitality that makes any vacation a memorable one.
